About Patty

I began my career, not as a counselor, but as public school junior and senior high certified teacher of Speech and Drama and English. It wasn’t long before I realized I students were asking me for help with them with their private, personal problems.

I found that I wasn’t professionally trained to be able to do my best to help them, but I asked myself, “why were they coming to me?” Primarily it was because they saw me as someone they could trust, who was dependable and would keep their secrets.

The school counselor, in those cases, they were unable to evaluate because they had no preface to a serious one-on-one relationship with them. In fact, many had never met them, much less had more than casual friendship with them.

So that was the problem that I found and that I thought I seriously had to solve. The students had shown me their need and had chosen me to be their confidante.

As a result, I enrolled in the Master’s Counseling Program at East Texas State Teachers College, which is now A&M University at Commerce. And I spent many days commuting to Commerce after school, and full-time summers to accomplish my Master’s.I continued on to reach the level for certification and licensing as a Texas Licensed Professional Counselor.
